Curriculum Vitae

Dr. Horst Neumann was born on 26 June, 1949 in Leverkusen (Germany).

Neumann studied Economics and Social Sciences in Hamburg and Berlin from 1967 to 1973. In 1995 he was awarded his doctorate with a thesis on "A comparison of the competitive strength of the German and Japanese car industries" and the title Dr. rer. pol. in Berlin. In 2009 he received an honorary professorship from Tongji University, Shanghai, which has enjoyed a close scientific partnership with Volkswagen for many years.

Neumann embarked on his career in 1973 as assistant to the Berlin Senator for Economic Affairs. From 1978 to 1994 he was employed in the economics department at the board of the IG Metall union in Frankfurt/Main, from 1983 as deputy manager. At the same time he was a Member of the Supervisory Board of Motorenwerke Mannheim AG (1981 - 1986), Adam Opel AG (1985 - 1995) and Rasselstein AG (1986 - 1994).

From 1994 to 2000 Neumann was a Member of the Board of Management and Personnel Director at Rasselstein GmbH and Rasselstein Hoesch GmbH, a subsidiary of the ThyssenKrupp Group in Andernach and Neuwied. In 2001 Neumann was appointed Member of the Board of Management and Labour Director at ThyssenKrupp Elevator AG, Düsseldorf.

In July 2002 Dr. Horst Neumann was appointed Member of the Board of Management of AUDI AG with responsibility for Human Resources.

With effect from 1 December, 2005 the Supervisory Board appointed him Member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG and the Volkswagen brand with responsibility for Human Resources and Labour Director. He has been responsible for Human Resources and Organization since January 2007.
