A big thumbs up for sustainability — Gold for the Volkswagen magazine

Success of the magazine at the Best of Corporate Publishing Award 2010

Since 2009, the Volkswagen magazine, which is published quarterly with a print run of 650,000 copies, has been printed on environmentally friendly recycled paper. It is the first magazine published by an automotive manufacturer to take this sustainable approach. By using recycled paper, the magazine stays true to Volkswagen's philosophy of ensuring sustainability and careful use of natural resources.

The fact that an environmentally friendly approach can be seamlessly combined with good printing design is demonstrated by the success of the magazine at the Best of Corporate Publishing Award 2010: The Volkswagen magazine won gold in the "Green Publishing" category. The panel qualified its decision by saying: "It features an incredibly coherent concept combining great journalistic skill and excellent photography. In addition, the visual and technical composition of the product is the most consistent example of how to pursue the goals of green publishing — it's the Volkswagen magazine".

The Volkswagen magazine is a great example of how companies can promote an environmentally friendly approach in their communication with customers. The fact that the Volkswagen magazine is now printed on certified 100% recycled paper instead of following conventional publishing methods creates an excellent eco-balance: For each issue, 61% less water and 61% less power is required, while CO2 emissions are reduced by 16%. The magazine is impressive confirmation that the "Think Blue" concept is certainly not restricted purely to vehicles; the concept can be applied to a variety of other corporate activities too.

The magazine is produced on behalf of Volkswagen by publishers G+J Corporate Editors, while the photography and design are handled by Mutabor Design. Over 600 publications were submitted for the Best of Corporate Publishing Award 2010 across 29 categories.
