Volkswagen Chattanooga Passes the 1000th Employee Threshold

99% of Production Team are Hamilton County Residents as Hiring Midpoint Arrives

Volkswagen Group of America, Chattanooga Operations announced today that its current orientation class of new team members contained the 1000th employee to be hired for the manufacturing facility set to begin production in the first quarter of 2011.

The 1000th employee represents the half-way point in the effort to hire and train the 2,000 plus employees who will build an all-new, mid-sized sedan. Hiring will continue through 2011 as the plant reaches full production.

“Volkswagen is very excited that we are on time and on schedule as planned in our hiring process,” said Hans-Herbert Jagla, Executive Vice President of Human Resources. “The workforce provided by Chattanooga and Hamilton County have the right skills, the right can-do attitude and have shown a commitment to excellence that will make our workforce second to none,” Jagla said.

Volkswagen now employs a total of 1,016 people, 324 of which are production workers from Hamilton County, Tennessee. There have been a total of 55 new hire orientation classes of common core training, a process which now takes place in the cutting edge Volkswagen Academy.

The Volkswagen Academy features modern classroom facilities with contemporary technology found in the finest university settings, but also features all the aspects of the manufacturing facility on a smaller scale to allow for hands-on training. This dual educational track is designed to help workers prepare mentally and physically, so that when they enter the plant they are experts in their field, whether it is the body shop, paint shop or the assembly shop.

“The workers that have completed the training in the Volkswagen Academy are already in the plant for on–the-job training, building pre-series vehicles with precision and a pride in their work that will guarantee that our vehicles are the highest quality cars on the road,” said Don Jackson, president of manufacturing. Pre-series vehicles are all developmental vehicles that are made before full production begins and saleable cars are produced.
