Volkswagen Group China Signs MOU with the Federal Ministry for the Environment (BMU) to Share E-mobility Expertise
• Volkswagen Group China become the first carmaker to join Sino-German “Climate Protection and Electric Mobility in China” project
• Volkswagen Group China to offer data and experience in e-mobility development
Volkswagen Group China and Germany’s Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety signed a memorandum of understanding. According to the MOU, Volkswagen Group China will provide data, expertise and its extensive experience in e-mobility development. These resources will be provided to stakeholders in both countries under a bilateral technical cooperation project, “Climate Protection and Electric Mobility in China,” signed on July 16th between Germany and China.
“It’s an honor for Volkswagen Group China to become the first carmaker to join an initiative by the Chinese and German governments to promote the development of e-mobility with the aim of protecting the environment,” said the incoming President and CEO of Volkswagen Group China, Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann. “The steps we are taking today demonstrate our support for the Chinese and German government in exploring the potential for e-mobility to reduce greenhouse gas emissions”.
The Sino-German project will develop strategies on how e-mobility can reduce environmental pressures caused by air pollutants and noise, especially in cities. The project focuses on analyzing the environmental impact of various forms of transportation, and ensuring solutions are the developed in the most sustainable ways, with the aim of conducting pilot projects in the two countries.
The signing of the memorandum today is the latest move by Volkswagen to cement its leadership role in e-mobility development. In April 2010, Volkswagen Group China outlined its e-mobility strategy for China, which includes offering its BlueMotion technology to its Chinese joint-venture partners and starting local production of electric cars in 2013/2014.
