2011 Detroit Auto Show –
World premiere of the new Passat for the USA

Newly developed saloon car to be built at plant in Chattanooga

This is a saloon with German roots, but it is a true American. Today, on the 2011 Detroit Auto Show stage, Volkswagen is unveiling a Passat developed specifically for the United States. Starting in mid-August, it will be available at North American dealers with an entry-level price in the 20,000 dollar range  larger, more comfortable and more efficient than ever.

“This car will serve as a draft horse, right next to the Jetta, working to make Volkswagen one of the most successful carmakers in North America. The new Passat has the potential to become a bestseller in the USA,” says Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Member of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen Group responsible for Development, at the press conference in Detroit. “There is hardly another saloon of this size (exactly 4,868 millimetres) that offers such a high level of technology and quality at a comparable price,” continues Dr. Hackenberg.

It is the balanced proportions of the new Passat that make its design very unique, timeless and sophisticated. Just a few precise lines suffice to define its form. Inside, it offers generous space. The results of the saloon’s larger wheelbase are especially perceptible in the rear seating area.

Volkswagen of America will offer the new Volkswagen in the three equipment lines S, SE and SEL. Even the base version has standard equipment that includes a tire pressure monitoring system, ABS with braking assistant, Hill Climb Assist, six airbags and insulated glass.

So, cruising through the city or on the highway is a Volkswagen driving experience that is safe, sporty and comfortable. The saloon is also friendly to the environment. The Clean Diesel (TDI) with 103 kW / 140 PS attains a fuel economy of 43 miles per gallon! Other powertrain options: a 125 kW/ 170 PS five cylinder gasoline engine and a six cylinder engine with 206 kW / 280 PS.
