Volkswagen signs power supply contract with VERBUND power plants
10 percent of electricity for German facilities from hydropower plants
In Wolfsburg today, Volkswagen Kraftwerk GmbH and the Austrian power company VERBUND Sales GmbH signed a power supply contract. Under the contract, Volkswagen will cover about ten percent of the power demand of German Volkswagen Group facilities using power generated by the Austrian VERBUND Group at its hydropower plants from 2013 onwards.
Power supplied from the VERBUND power plants starting on January 1, 2013 is to meet about ten percent of the power demand of twelve Volkswagen Group production plants in Germany. VERBUND is Austria's leading power company and one of the most eco-friendly power generators in Europe. Each year, the company generates about 29.5 billion kWh of electric power at 123 hydropower plants in Austria and Germany.
"Our cooperation with VERBUND is a further step towards environmentally compatible energy supplies. From 2013, we will be in a position to cover 75 percent of the power demand for Group plants in Germany from efficient cogeneration or renewable energy plants," said Raimund Wunder, Managing Director of Volkswagen Kraftwerk GmbH.
The Volkswagen Group has set itself the target of reducing CO2 emissions from production by 40 percent by 2020. Key aspects are the diversification of power generation and the further development of renewable energy sources. At the same time, the Group plans to significantly improve the efficiency of its power generation activities by constructing two combined-cycle (gas and steam turbine) power plants as well as five compact cogeneration plants. In the medium term, Volkswagen is investing about 600 million euros in energy supplies.
