Prize for the Best Supplier in Environmental Protection

The Volkswagen Group Award 2006 in the Environment Category Goes to ThyssenKrupp Steel AG.

The 24 best suppliers to the Volkswagen Group were presented with the “Volkswagen Group Award”. “The Volkswagen Group Award has become an institution now and is recognition of successful cooperation”, said Francisco J. Garcia Sanz, Member of the Board of Volkswagen AG to the suppliers’ representatives. The Group Award Environment went to ThyssenKrupp Steel AG for its contribution to energy efficiency in production and product.

Dr Bernd Pischetsrieder, CEO of Volkswagen AG, and Board Member Francisco Javier Garcia Sanz, presented the Group Award Environment to Dr Ulrich Jaroni, Member of the Board of ThyssenKrupp Steel AG at a ceremony in Hanover. The steel manufacturer is helping to reduce weights in automobile construction with innovative steel products. The Duisburg plant uses the process gases produced during steel manufacture as energy for other production stages and thus produces steel with a high level of energy efficiency. "ThyssenKrupp Steel uses environmentally friendly technologies for the economic manufacture and processing of innovative steel products, which – due to their high rigidity, combined with high formability, allow thin-walled, weight-optimised car components", emphasised Francisco Garcia-Sanz in his eulogy. “This means that, in addition to the effective use of energy in the Duisburg plant, Volkswagen customers also achieve a reduction in fuel consumption.”

The Volkswagen Group Award is presented in five categories, which are decisive in the relationship with suppliers: Development expertise, product quality, logistics, entrepreneurial performance and environmental awareness. The award in the environmental category is based on Volkswagen criteria, proof of sustainable environmental management and the ability to incorporate environmentally related innovations in the vehicle.

Volkswagen sets high standards for its suppliers, including the sustainability of the supplier relationship. This is based on Volkswagen’s environmental policy, quality policy and the “Declaration on the Social Rights and Industrial Relations at Volkswagen”. Within the scope of the “Priority A – Partners for the Environment” programme, Volkswagen offers seminars for its suppliers that help to exchange experience and make demands on Integrated Environmental Protection, Health and Safety at Work and Social Standards. A research project with Oldenburg University on “Sustainability in Supplier Relations” supports sustainable purchasing management.
