Together with President Luís Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil who participated by telephone, Stephan Schaller, speaker for the board of management of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, and Roberto Cortes, president of Volkswagen Trucks and Buses, today began operation of a new logistics centre in Resende and announced the start of a third shift.
In the future, up to 300 units will be produced daily in Resende instead of the previous 200 units. This expansion in production will create up to 1,300 new jobs in the Resende factory. Opening the logistics centre and expanding production are part of a broad programme of investment with which Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles will sustainably strengthen its business area of trucks and buses. One billion reals are to be invested in modernising the site by 2012.
"Resende is a success story without equal in the international commercial vehicle industry and in the Brazilian truck and bus business," emphasized Schaller. He called the Resende factory one of the "most modern and efficient truck and bus factories in the world". With a planned annual production of approximately 60,000 trucks and buses, Volkswagen continues on its course of growth. Schaller emphasized the significance of the business area of trucks and buses for the brand's international growth strategy: "Heavy commercial vehicles are one of the supporting pillars in the success of our brand".
Volkswagen Trucks & Buses has been producing HGVs for Brazil and the export markets since 1996. The company is Brazil's largest truck producer and leads the market for trucks with a maximum permitted weight of more than five tonnes. The vehicles are sold in more than 30 countries in South America, Africa and the Middle East.
