Business and Biodiversity Initiative launches own Internet portal

Volkswagen founding member of global learning and dialog platform

Well-known companies from Germany, Japan and Brazil, including Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft, are supporting the German government, which currently holds the Presidency of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), in its efforts to bring the CBD further forward. To this end, the Business and Biodiversity Initiative set up in 2008 is to be expanded into a joint learning and dialog platform to provide fresh impetus for the voluntary integration of industry in the drive to protect biodiversity.

The initiative launched its own Internet portal a few days ago, providing its members with an even stronger international network. The portal, currently only available in German, can be accessed at www.business-and-biodiversity.de, provides information on the initiative and its members as well as a comprehensive overview of the methods and instruments for integrating biodiversity in entrepreneurial action and management.

The Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety commissioned Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) in Berlin to coordinate the Business and Biodiversity Initiative. The participating companies seek to set a global example for the forward-looking management of the opportunities and risks of eco-system change in industry and to intensify the communication of their practical actions. Last year, the initiative’s participants already gave a commitment to integrate biodiversity in their management systems by signing a Leadership Declaration.

The Business and Biodiversity Initiative will take an active part in the 10th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP10) taking place in Nagoya, Japan, in October 2010. Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft is a founding member of the initiative and was actively involved in COP9 held in Bonn last year.
