- December was Volkswagen Brand’s best ever month in China, delivering 342,100 models
Volkswagen closed 2017 on an all-time high in China. A record-breaking 3.177 million vehicles were delivered to customers in Mainland China and Hong Kong, representing year-on-year growth of 5.9%. The brand remained the number one choice for Chinese car buyers, with strong performances from its joint ventures, FAW- Volkswagen and SAIC VOLKSWAGEN. Stephan Wöllenstein, CEO of Volkswagen China Passenger Cars Brand: “Volkswagen Brand reached a new milestone during 2017 in China, with the highest recorded deliveries in any single market in a year. We are thankful that over 3 million customers placed their trust in us during 2017: a warm welcome to the Volkswagen family! To end an already fantastic year, December was our best month ever, with 342,100 Volkswagen models handed over. Our joint venture partners and dealers can be as proud of their efforts as we are.”
Demand for SUVs continues to grow in China, with Volkswagen Brand breaking the 400,000 delivery mark for the first time. Wöllenstein: “With 337,000 deliveries, the Tiguan family realized a 41.8% year-on-year increase. SAIC VOLKSWAGEN’s Teramont made a remarkable entry into the B-SUV segment, achieving deliveries of 62,100 by year end. This is a great start to our planned SUV portfolio expansion to 10 models by 2020. We intend to become the SUV brand in China, starting with 2018 as Volkswagen’s ‘Year of the SUV’. In 2018 we will launch 4 new SUVs – 3 being completely new. Both our joint ventures will have a full SUV portfolio in the near future.“
Volkswagen sedan models performed well, too. The Lavida, Sagitar and Jetta were among the 10 best sold models in China for 2017, as was the Tiguan. The Magotan achieved a notable year-on-year growth of 28.4%. Lifestyle-oriented models, such as FAW-Volkswagen‘s C-TREK, and iconic brand models, like the new Golf and Beetle, also attracted positive interest.
