Thomas Ulbrich: The worldwide conversion starts here

Zwickau is at the heart of the Volkswagen brand's global e-mobility initiative. Thomas Ulbrich, Member of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen Brand responsible for E-Mobility and Managing Director of Volkswagen Sachsen, explains the strategy.

The electric car for millions, not for millionaires - this is how Thomas Ulbrich sums up the promise that is at the heart of Volkswagen's e-mobility initiative. The brand will soon deliver on this promise, in twelve months' time. Then the first fully electric ID. will roll off the assembly line. For Volkswagen, this is an important step on the road to becoming the world's largest e-mobility manufacturer. The center of this transformation: Zwickau in Saxony.

The conversion to an electric production site has already begun. Zwickau will be converted in several phases from the production of cars with combustion engines to 100 percent electromobility. "In less than two years we will then be able to ramp up the site again to 330,000 vehicles per year," says Ulbrich. A task for which the site is ideally suited, says Ulbrich: "Saxony already has more than one hundred years of automotive tradition and we need precisely this know-how and this passion for the very highest quality. Furthermore, the Zwickau site stands for our commitment to Germany."
