It’s a hectic corner, deep inside Hall 54 at the Volkswagen main plant in Wolfsburg. On assembly line 3, on production section 4, at the very back in the F2 area: here, almost finished Volkswagen Golf vehicles are transported down the assembly line. The vehicles have just been fitted with fully automatic axles and drive systems, and now employees are putting cladding on the underbody. Between the employees there is someone who is used to keeping track, even when things get hectic: Joachim Löw. The national trainer and Volkswagen brand ambassador pays a visit to the production of the new Golf before its world premiere, scheduled to take place later that same evening. And he even helps with the assembly himself.

A smile says more than 1000 words: National coach Joachim Löw with a first-generation Volkswagen Golf. The classic and its successors were exhibited during the world premiere of the new Golf at the Wolfsburg plant.

Shortly before that, Joachim Löw himself was at the wheel of the new Golf, accompanied by Jürgen Stackmann, Member of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand with responsibility for ‘Sales, Marketing and After Sales’. “It drives very well,” Löw praises the Golf. “And if you know the Golf, you’ll immediately find your way around it.” Stackmann agrees: “The greatest feat of the Golf is that it always remains a Golf.”

“It drives very well,” Löw praises the Golf after a test drive of the new model.

In Hall 54, the vehicles move around Löw. The Golf 8 is preparing for its market launch in December 2019. Löw gently strokes exhaust tailpipes while Stackmann explains the technology. He has known the car off by heart for a long time.

Parallels between car assembly and football

Then Löw helps with the assembly himself. On a grey new Golf, he is to install the front passenger drive shaft guard. Mechanics know: a somewhat tricky spot in the engine compartment. The first nut does not sit immediately. Sometimes it’s the same in car assembly as in football: standard situations are no guarantee. Löw laughs his little mishap away, the nut sits in the second attempt and Löw screws on the protection in good time before the Golf automatically tilts in the other direction.

Later he admits: The task was complicated. “It looks very simple, but you have to develop a little feeling.” He knows that from football. And he finds other parallels: It’s about teamwork and passion for the cause. “Everything goes hand in hand, everyone knows the processes,” enthuses Löw. “It’s great that people here work with a lot of joy,” he adds: “Everyone has a smile on their face. That is the decisive factor: What is the team spirit like? Do you do something with great passion? Then usually a great product comes out.” While he takes off his work gloves again, the new Golf with the number 2,192 glides towards its completion. Hall 54 is already in the middle of Golf production.
